Advanced Attributes

Manage inherited, planned, and logged attribute values

Introduction

You can use advanced attribute functionalities to manage inheritable attribute values (Inherit value), track attribute value changes (Attribute value log), and plan future attribute values (Attribute planned values), with full visibility across the functional location hierarchy.

You can define the attributes which need to inherit values in the Attribute types page. You can navigate to this page by going to Asset management > Setup > Attribute types.

You can view the attributes of a functional location by going to Asset management > Functional locations > All functional locations, and from the list of functional locations, select one. On the Functional location details page, scroll down to the Attributes FastTab.

Inherit Attribute Values

The Inherit value functionality allows you to automatically pass down attribute value changes from a parent functional location to its child locations in the hierarchy and the assets installed in them.

To enable the Inherit value functionality:

  1. Go to System administration > Workspaces > Feature management.
  2. On the Feature management page, go to the All tab and look for the feature Dynaway - Advanced attributes.
  3. Select the feature and enable it by clicking on the Enable now button at the bottom right of the page (see screenshot 01).
  4. Once enabled, the Inherit value option becomes available on the Attribute types page (see screenshot 02) and in the attribute types data entity, where you can define which attribute types should inherit values through the hierarchy.
  5. When an attribute type is marked with Inherit value, you can expect the following behavior:
    • When you update an attribute value on a functional location, the same value is updated on all its sub-functional locations and assets installed in them.
    • Before applying the changes, the system shows a confirmation dialog if the child functional locations have the same attribute type.
    • Only existing attribute records on child locations (and assets installed in them) are updated. The system does not create new attribute records.

Attribute Value Log

The Attribute value log allows you to track all changes made to an attribute value on an asset or functional location. Note that creating a new attribute does not create a log entry. Only changes to an existing attribute value are recorded in the log.

To view the Attribute value log for a specific functional location:

  1. Go to Asset management > Functional locations > All functional locations, and from the list of functional locations, select one.
  2. On the Functional location details page, scroll down to the Attributes FastTab.
  3. On the Attributes FastTab, click Value logs to view the change log for all attribute values of the selected functional location (see screenshot 01).
  4. You are directed to the Attribute value log page (see screenshot 02) of the selected functional location. This log shows the following information:
    • Attribute value changes.
    • Date and time of the change.
    • User who made the change.
    • Whether the change was made directly or inherited.
    • Remark entered when modifying an attribute value (see screenshot 03).
      • Note: When you modify an attribute value, a dialog box prompts you to enter a remark if the Attribute type has Inherit values enabled.
  5. You can review the Attribute value log to track historical changes and inherited updates for advanced attributes.

Attribute Planned Values

You can define future (planned) values for attributes assigned to a functional location.

To create and view planned attribute values:

  1. Go to Asset management > Functional locations > All functional locations, and from the list of functional locations, select one.
  2. On the Functional location details page, scroll down to the Attributes FastTab.
  3. On the Attributes FastTab, click Planned values (see screenshot 01).
  4. You will be directed to the Attribute planned values page, where you can:
    • Select the attribute type.
    • Specify the planned date and time when the new value should become effective.
    • Enter the planned attribute value.
  5. On this page, you can also see from where a planned value is inherited by using the column Inherited from functional location.
  6. The Attribute planned values page shows:
    • Planned values created directly on the selected functional location.
    • Planned values inherited from parent functional locations, where:
      • The attribute type has Inherit value enabled.
      • The same attribute type exists on the current functional location.
  7. To apply a planned value as the current attribute value:
    • Select a planned value that is defined directly on the functional location.
    • Click Apply planned value.
      • Note that you cannot apply planned values that are inherited from a parent functional location.
      • To apply such values, you must navigate to the parent shown in the Inherited from functional location column and apply the planned value there.
  8. When you apply a planned value on a functional location that has child functional locations with the same attribute type:
    • A confirmation dialog shows the number of functional locations and assets that will be affected.
    • If you select No, no changes are applied.
    • If you select Yes:
      • The planned value is removed from the planned values list.
      • The current attribute value on the functional location and installed asset is updated with the value defined in the planned values list.
      • The same value is applied to all affected child functional locations and assets in a batch job.
      • If verbose mode is enabled, you can see which functional locations and assets were updated.
