Resource skills ensure that only qualified personnel are assigned to maintenance tasks, supporting quality, safety, and compliance. This manual describes how skills are defined, assigned, and validated in Dynaway EAM, based on the code and official documentation.


What Are Resource Skills?

Resource skills represent the competencies, certifications, and experience required to perform specific maintenance activities. Skills are linked to work order lines, actions, and resources, ensuring the right person is matched to the right job.

How to Set Up Resource Skills

Prerequisite: Skill-Based Planning is switched on in the Asset Management Setup

Step 1: Define Skills

  1. Go to the Maintenance Skills setup page in Business Central.
  2. Click New to create a skill.
  3. Enter the Skill Code and Description.
  4. Specify the Parent Skill if needed.
  5. Save the skill.

Step 2: Assign Skills to Resources

  1. Navigate to Resources.
  2. Open the record for the resource.
  3. Go to the Maintenance Skills action.
  4. Add needed skills for the resource.
  5. Save the assignment.

Step 3: Specify Skills on Work Orders

  1. Open a Work Order Plan or Work Order page.
  2. Go to the Resource tab.
  3. On the specific resource line, select an assist edit button in the Skills field.
  4. Add needed skills.

Step 4: Enable Skill-Based Assignment

  1. In the Asset Management Setup, define the level of control for skills in your company.

Step 5: Maintain and Update Skills

  1. Regularly review and update the master skill list.
  2. Track training and certification renewals.

  • Skill Code: Required skill for the task (linked to Maintenance Skill).
  • Description: Skill description (auto-filled from master skill list).
  • From Plan: Indicates if the skill was copied from a plan.
  • From Work Order Action: Indicates if the skill was copied from a work order action.

  • Work Order Action Code: Links skill to a specific action.
  • Type, Action Line No., Line No.: Identify the action line.
  • Skill Code: Required skill for the action.
  • Description: Skill description.

Time Registration

Time registration enables accurate tracking of labor hours spent on maintenance tasks, supporting cost control, performance analysis, and compliance. This manual explains how to set up and use time registration, including step-by-step instructions for running the clock.


What Is Time Registration?

Time registration records the start and end times for work performed on work orders. Entries are linked to work order lines, resources, and users, ensuring precise allocation of labor costs and supporting reporting and billing.

Step-by-Step: How to Run the Clock (Start/Stop Timer)

Step 1: Open the Work Order

  1. Go to the relevant work order in Business Central.
  2. Select the work order line you will be working on.

Step 2: Start the Timer

  1. Click Start Timer (may appear as a button or action on the work order line or in the My Time Registrations page).
  2. The system records your user name, resource, work order reference, and the current start date-time.
  3. Confirm any required work type or resource selection.

Step 3: Perform the Work

  1. Complete the assigned maintenance task.
  2. You may pause and resume the timer if needed (if supported by your setup).

Step 4: Stop the Timer

  1. Click Stop Timer when the work is finished.
  2. The system records the end date-time and calculates the duration.
  3. Add a description or notes if required.

Step 5: Review and Submit

  1. Review your time entry in the My Time Registrations page.
  2. Submit for approval if required by your workflow.

Manual Time Entry

  • If you did not use the timer, you can manually enter start and end date-time, duration, and work order reference in the My Time Registrations page.
  • Supervisors can review, edit, and approve time entries as needed.

  • Document Type, Document No., Document Line Type, Document Line No.: Reference to the work order and line.

What Are Work Types?

Work types are used to classify maintenance tasks, support resource allocation, and enable reporting and analysis. They can represent preventive, corrective, inspection, calibration, and other types of work.


Key Fields in Work Type

  • Code: Unique identifier for the work type.
  • Description: Name or explanation of the work type.
  • Unit of Measure Code: Specifies the unit of measure for the work type (e.g., hours, pieces).

Extended Fields

  • Maintenance Work Type (Boolean): Indicates if the work type can be used in asset management. If unchecked, the system checks if the work type is used in maintenance and prevents removal if in use.
  • Scheduling Board Color (Enum): Color used for visual identification on the scheduling board (e.g., Blue, Green, Red).

How to Set Up Work Types

  1. Go to the Work Types setup page in Business Central.
  2. Click New to create a work type.
  3. Enter the Code, Description, and Unit of Measure Code.
  4. Set Maintenance Work Type to true if the work type should be available for asset management.
  5. Choose a Scheduling Board Color for visual planning (if available).
  6. Save the work type.
